by Dermot Kavanagh Orthodontics : Friday 19 April 2013

Silent Disease On The Increase

A new patient information leaflet has been launched to raise awareness of gum disease; a silent disease that can impact on general health as well as having serious implications on oral health. The symptoms of gum disease may include:

  • Dark red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Pain when biting on food
  • Gums look like they are low down the teeth
  • Sensitive or loose teeth
  • Bad breath

As well as the impact on oral health, gum disease has been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, bacteral pneumonia, rheumatoid arthritis and other systemic disorders.
But the good news is that in the early stages, gum disease is completely reversible through;

  • Thorough tooth brushing twice a day with flouride toothpaste
  • Careful cleaning in between the teeth with floss or interproximal brushes daily
  • Avoiding sugary snacks between meals
  • No smoking
